Tompkins County Library, 101 E. Green St. IthacaThe Ithaca Children's Garden in partnership with the Cornell Plantations will sponsor a free public screening at Tompkins County Public Library on June 2 at 6:00 pm. Film Originator and Outreach Director Elizabeth Goodenough, and a panel of local researchers and educators will be on hand to answer questions along with exhibitors of local nature programs for children. Produced by Michigan Television, Where Do the Children Play? grew from Dr. Goodenough's work on Secret Spaces of Childhood (University of Michigan Press 2004). "Children need free time every day to discover their own abilities, desires, and limitations," says Goodenough, who also edited the film's twin companion volumes, Where Do the Children Play?:A Study Guide to the Film and A Place for Play. Where Do the Children Play? is part of a larger outreach project at University of Michigan developed by Dr. Elizabeth Goodenough. It includes a web site ( www.michigantelevision.org/childrenplay); two companion volumes; a documentary with children's author Christopher Paul Curtis filmed in Flint, Michigan entitled "Secret Spaces/Childhood Places"; and three youth mini-documentaries, and programs coordinated at the Ginsberg Center by Ashley Miller. Support for WDCP? came from the Ruth Mott Foundation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation and W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
